Mayhemigew Bog Restoration

The Mayhemigew Bog Restoration Project will restore a few acres of previously harvested peatland to re-establish a functional, self-sustaining bog ecosystem. The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with site preparation, including vegetation removal and surface profiling. Sphagnum moss and other peatland vegetation will then be collected from a donor bog and applied across the site. Straw mulch and a targeted application of fertilizer will support plant establishment. Hydrological conditions will be restored by blocking drainage ditches and installing water retention structures to raise and stabilize the water table. Edge areas will also be restored to improve ecological continuity. Long-term monitoring will track progress and inform adaptive management. Overall, the project will restore key ecological functions, including water regulation and vegetation recovery, while enhancing carbon storage and improving habitat quality for wildlife.

Latest update

July 3, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until August 2, 2026 respecting that determination.
