Highway 93A Mile 5 Hill Slope Stabilization

Parks Canada is proposing slope stabilization work along Highway 93A in Jasper National Park, at a location commonly known as Mile 5 Hill. The slope extends for 1 kilometer beside the roadway and is experiencing erosion and rockfall hazards that have increased since the 2024 Jasper Wildfire. A site-specific, targeted approach will be used to address different areas of instability along the slope, rather than applying a single solution across the entire site. Potential activities include a range of stabilization measures such as bioengineering, slope flattening, drainage improvements, and the installation of rockfall or erosion control features. The project is intended to reduce hazards, protect the roadway, and support safe travel.

Latest update

July 22 2026 – Parks Canada issued its Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
