Northgate-Riding Mountain National Park Trail Expansion

Riding Mountain National Park is considering a proposal from an external client, The Northgate Trails Inc., who are proposing a new, multi-use stacked trail system that will establish a formal connection with the existing Northgate Trail Network (26 km) located adjacent to the park. Construction will include 25 km of new trail built using sustainable trail construction best practices. A combination of raised-tread and bench-cut trail construction methods will be used to suit site-specific terrain and environmental conditions. In addition, the existing 5 km Crawford Creek Trail will be upgraded primarily to raised-tread construction to enhance trail sustainability, durability, and overall user experience. The upgraded Crawford Creek Trail will serve as the primary climbing route, with new sustainable trail loops providing multiple descent options back to the trailhead. Green trails will peel off sooner with less climbing and gentler grades. Several blue trails will peel off at higher elevations. The steepest climbing is encountered along the last kilometer of the climb trail and will provide experienced trail users with a longer wilderness experience with a very remote feeling. The stacked-loop trail system is designed to support user progression, accommodate a broader range of skill levels, and appeal to multiple user groups. The west side of the network will be designed as a multi-use trail system optimized for mountain biking, while the east side will support cross-country skiing.
