Edwards Creek Trail Upgrade Proposal

Riding Mountain National Park is considering making upgrades to the west side of the Edwards Creek Trail to heighten user experience in terms of flow and vistas, while also reducing future impacts and maintenance requirements. The proposed project is still in conceptual design phase with stakeholders being consulted as part of the impact assessment process and internal agreements and processes. The proposal incorporates several different components for consideration:

1. Adding a curving raised tread within the existing corridor, following sustainable trail standards, with strategic reroutes to bring trail users to views of the beautiful valley to the west of the current trail (formerly an old logging road not designed with user experience in mind).
2. Addition of two trail re-routes, each approximately 500 m in length and 0.6 m wide. Hazelnut shrubs are the dominant vegetation species in the proposed locations and would need to be removed during construction.
3. The remaining 2 km of trail may be narrowed from a 4 m wide grass trail to a 0.6 m wide trail. Crushed material would be added from an approved source to raise the tread and create a sustainable trail, shedding water laterally, reducing the trail's footprint and overall increasing user experience.
4. The upgrades would also provide a link between the Crawford Creek trailhead in the park and to the Northgate Trails network.
Timeline for the proposed project is yet to be determined as consultation commences.
