Deep Bay Parking & Pedestrian Access

Project Objective: During busy periods, the demand to access Deep Bay by vehicle, bike and foot traffic is more than what the existing infrastructure can accommodate. The parking lot can become hazardous for visitors due to overcrowding of vehicles and the inability of Wasagaming Drive to safely accommodate two-way traffic and parking. Project description includes creating a new gravel parking lot on the south side of TaWaPit Drive (can accommodate 38 vehicles) in a previously disturbed area, with a pedestrian access corridor and road crossing from the parking lot to the Deep Bay Area. Construction of the new parking lot and access corridor will require removal of vegetation and top organic layer, followed by placement of granular fill. Signage and highway painting will complete this phase. Following construction activities, Wasagaming Drive from the West Intersection with TaWaPit to the existing parking area will be closed to vehicular traffic, open only to bikes and pedestrians. Another pedestrian crossing will be painted where the new east ramp of the Lakeshore Trail intersects with this section of Wasagaming Drive.

Latest update

August 20, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until September 19, 2026 respecting that determination.
