Miette Road Rehabilitation - Part C - Morris Creek Culvert Replacement

The existing culvert at km 9.5 along Miette Road at Morris Creek has experienced severe deformation and is at risk of structural failure. Visible surface depressions in the driving surface indicate subsurface damage, posing a potential safety hazard to motorists. A culvert failure could lead to localized flooding and restrict access to the Miette area, including Miette Hot Springs, Miette Hot Springs Bungalows, trails and backcountry campgrounds. Two design options were considered to address this issue. Option 2 was the preferred design that involves rerouting a section of the existing watercourse along Miette Road by constructing a new channel that would tie into Morris Creek at both ends and improving fish passage. This design option was also selected based on long-term sustainability, constructability, costs and environmental benefits. The project involves removing the existing 3.8 m SPCSP culvert and installing a 900 mm corrugated CSP culvert to maintain drainage from the south side of Miette Road. It also includes decommissioning an upstream culvert and constructing a new channel to reconnect Morris Creek at both ends. The new channel will run parallel to Miette Road on its north side, featuring riprap lining, boulder weirs, in-stream habitat structures (e.g., boulders and large woody debris), and riparian restoration. The total project footprint is approximately 3,600 m² and will also include vegetation clearing, earthworks, utility relocations as needed, and localized road repaving.
