Parks Canada Agency Miette Road Rehabilitation - Part B - Washout

This project will be assessed with a basic impact assessment.

In June 2023 the Miette area experienced a major precipitation event which resulted in a wash out that significantly damaged a section of Miette Road. This event resulted in the prolonged closure of Miette Hot Springs and many surrounding facilities. Emergency engineering investigation and repair work was conducted from June to September 2023. A temporary repair solution permitting single lane traffic has been completed. However, a long-term solution is required to restore two lane traffic and prevent future road wash out occurrence. This project is aimed at providing the long-term solution to ensure safe access to the Miette Region. Miette Road is the only access road to several popular attractions and accommodation facilities in Jasper National Park. The road has insufficient drainage, slope instability and structural deficiencies, as evidenced by the road washout. Upon completion, this project will improve safety, improve the climate resilience of the Miette Road, and reduce the frequency of unplanned emergency repairs on the road and effectively reduce the risk of facility closures for Miette Hot Springs and third-party businesses

The work scope involves realigning the existing road toward the north-east direction so that a safe offset distance can be maintained from the edge of slope. The work will involve clearing/cutting existing the embankment, removal of vegetation, installation of new roadside ditch, installation of culvert drainage infrastructure, relocation of existing utilities, and construction of new road alignment (subbase and surface paving).

 

Amendment 1 - signed and approved February 21, 2025:
Parks Canada is proposing an amendment to the Miette Road Rehabilitation project. The proposed amendment would include the addition of work scope to repair a significant backslope sliding failure along an approximate 200m stretch of Miette Road (Part A) adjacent to the washout section (Part B). The proposed work scope of Part A would involve cutting back the bottom of the existing back slope to re-establish the roadside ditch, expanding the road with a gravel shoulder and installing lock block barrier to catch fallen debris.

March 5, 2025 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
