2026-2029 Wildfire Risk Reduction Wasagaming

The project is focused around the townsite of Wasagaming in Riding Mountain National Park. The Wasagaming townsite is a commercial and cabin development approximately 150ha in area. There are four main areas within the Wasagaming townsite; the Wasagaming campground, the Clear Lake Cabin area (CLCA), the main cottage area and the business area. The Wasagaming townsite is mostly seasonal with an operating season for most businesses and leaseholders between May and October. There are a few businesses that remain open over the winter months and there is a section of the Wasagaming Campground with oTentik's open year round and some winter camping sites. The Wasagaming campground contains about 450 campsites, 20 oTentik's (6 of which area open year round) and multiple small hard-sided accommodations called "Turtle Village." The CLCA is the more densely populated area of about 15ha and contains over 550 structures such as cabins, cook shelters and the Jamboree Hall. In the cottage area there is approximately 254 cottages and most contain additional structures such as garages, storage sheds and small suites. Additionally, there are multiple businesses and Parks Canada infrastructure throughout Wasagaming including critical infrastructure such as the waste water treatment plant and water treatment plants. Most of the vegetation in Wasagaming has been planted through-out it's development as the majority of the area that is now Wasagaming was historically grassland. The vegetation management aspect of this project will focus on four main actions: 1. Removal of extensive deadfall along the slopes between Clear Lake and the cottages along Wasagaming Drive. 2. Extended Zone treatment in the Smokey Hollow area of the Wasagaming Campground. 3. Extended Zone treatment of forested area within the cottage area bordered by Primula, Ta-Wa-Pit and Wasagaming Drive. 4. Extended zone treatment of forested area at the junction of Highway 10 and Ta-Wa-Pit Drive. 5. Slash piles will also be burned in the winter months to further reduce the fuel load.
