Garrison Grounds Parking Lot Expansion at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site

In collaboration with the Province of Nova Scotia, the Garrison Grounds parking lot will be expanded with the purpose of increasing the parking capacity for hospital staff and visitors at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. The expansion would consist of 140 new parking stalls for a total of 247 parking stalls and a footprint of 8,200 m2. The work would involve the excavation and removal of existing asphalt, curbs, grass and soil. The existing paved area (4,400 m2) would be replaced/refinished and new pavement would be added in the expanded parking location (3,100 m2). In addition, 700 m2 of ground/vegetation would be disturbed by construction activities and reinstated upon work completion. Heavy equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, asphalt paver and a ride-on roller will be used throughout the project. A new storm water management system would be installed and as well as a new electrical service (underground electrical conduits) to support the new lighting system and two (2) electrical vehicle charging stations that will serve four (4) parking stalls. Material storage and laydown is expected to be contained within the project's footprint. The project is estimated to begin in May of 2024 and be completed over the summer.
