Cabot Trail - La Bloc Beach Coastal Erosion Protection

The project involves coastal erosion protection along a vulnerable section of the Cabot Trail, La Bloc Beach, within Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The objective is to protect the highway from ongoing coastal erosion and improve its long-term resilience. Project planning is informed by a coastal modelling study that considers the protection of built assets and natural resources. Construction activities generally include excavation and grading of the highway embankment, installation of a rock revetment using armourstone, filterstone, and clearstone and extension of four drainage culverts through the revetment. Following construction, excavated beach material will be reinstated over and along the sides of the revetment to help integrate the structure into the surrounding landscape. Native vegetation will then be planted to restore disturbed areas and provide additional slope stabilization.
