Harbour Improvements at Cheticamp Small Craft Harbour, Inverness County, NS

The Small Craft Harbours Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes to undertake a harbour improvements project at Cheticamp (La Digue) Harbour, located in Cheticamp in Inverness County, Nova Scotia.  The proposed project will include the removal of the existing pile work wharf, expansion of the rubble mound approach with infilling behind it to create additional service area, installation of floating docks, and dredging along the front of the service area.

The existing 300 m2 finger pier wharf at the southern end of the harbour will be removed, as it is in disrepair.  It is expected an excavator would be utilized to remove the wharf. The timber from the wharf would be disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.

In the approximate area of the wharf removal, five new floating docks will be installed. These new structures will form an L shape, generally following the orientation of the existing breakwater and shoreline. In the northern section of this area, a new infill service area will be created in order to maintain a straight shoreline for these docks and create a required rubblemound breakwater/shoreline protection.  Armourstone will be placed to extend the existing shoreline protection at the south of the harbour once the finger wharf is removed. Rock will be placed using heavy machinery (e.g. excavator) working from the shore.

Dredging would be carried out in front of the new shoreline protection to allow safe navigational passage and berthing at the new floating wharves.  The proposed dredge area has an approximate footprint of 378 m2 to a depth of -2.5 m below chart datum.  This area has not been previously dredged. The method of dredging would be determined by the successful contractor.  Land-based dredging could be carried out from an excavator working off the shoreline. Dredging could also be carried out from an excavator working off a temporary rock access road which would be removed at the end of the project. Dredging may also occur from an excavator working off a floating barge. Dredge material would be disposed of at a federal site designed to receive and manage dredge material.
