Northwest Roundhead Wall, Northeast Canal/Entrance Wall Reconstruction at Canso Canal DFO-RPSS, Inverness County, NS

The Real Property, Safety and Security Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes to undertake the reconstruction of the deteriorated concrete face on the northwest roundhead wall, northeast entrance wall, and the interface between the northeast entrance wall and the northeast canal wall located at the Canso Canal in the Strait of Canso, Inverness County, Nova Scotia. 

The proposed project will involve the removal of comprised concrete sections of the Northwest Roundhead Wall by hand and repairs to the façade with reinforced concrete.  At the Northeast Entrance Wall, the project will involve the removal of comprised concrete by hand, placement of forms and tremie pour concrete plugs in front of the old existing plugs. In the area of the Interface between Northeast Entrance Wall and Northeast Canal Wall, the project will involve the removal of compromised concrete and deteriorated piles, reconstruction of interface by installing four (4) new 610 mm steel piles anchored to bedrock, a new concrete plug in front of the existing deteriorated plug and replacement of the concrete deck.

Notice of Intent to Make a Determination – Start of Public Comment Period

August 6, 2021 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada- Real Property, Safety and Security (DFO-RPSS) intends to make a determination regarding whether carrying out the proposed reconstruction of the existing deteriorated concrete walls of the Canso Canal is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, DFO-RPSS is inviting public comments in respect to that determination for 30 days following the posting of this notice.
