Sydney Harbour Aids to Navigation Project

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) are investing in a new Aids to Navigation System for Sydney Harbour.  The project provides significant modifications to the existing Aids to Navigation System in order to enable the use of the deep water commercial channel created under a public-private partnership in 2012. The deep water channel cannot be used until these modifications to existing Navigational System are implemented. Once completed the full commercial potential of the Harbour can be achieved.

The Canadian Coast Guard have determined the existing two sets of ranges require relocation and upgrades, along with the addition of year round floating aids. This will involve purchasing property, and establishment of four (4) new aid to navigation towers of various heights between 9 and 49 meters along with 14 new buoys.

Tower details and locations are as follows:

  • Sydney Harbour Front Range – New 40 ft steel tower with a foundation footprint less than 40 m2, along with construction of a residential gravel driveway from the neighboring public road to the tower (46-10-39.7566 N 60-15-29.8808W).
  • Sydney Harbour Rear Range – New 30 ft tall modular lighthouse with a foundation footprint less than 30 m2, along with construction of a residential gravel driveway from the existing driveway to the site (46-09-11.7303 N 60-17-01.4068W).
  • Sydney South Arm Front Range – New 30 ft steel tower with a foundation footprint less than 40 m2 (46-09-26.8066 N 60-12-13.4960W).
  • Sydney South Arm Range – New 50 ft steel tower with a foundation footprint less than 40 m2 (46-09-22.54165N 60-12-11.2635W).

The proposed implementation of the site development is as follows:

  • 2022/Winter 2023 – Acquisition of Property
  • Winter/Spring 2023 – Site Specific Design work
  • Spring/Summer 2023 – Procurement of Infrastructure
  • Fall 2023 – Construction Activities

    • Buoy Installation
