Woodland Cree First Nation Transfer Station

Woodland Cree Nation is proposing to construct a Waste Transfer Station. The transfer station will receive the community's household waste including large items, recyclables, residential renovation waste, tires, household hazardous wastes, electronics, whitegoods, propane tanks, and derelict vehicles. The waste will be hauled from the new transfer station by Woodland Cree to landfills operated by Peace River Waste Management Company. The transfer station will have a 30-year service life with provision for future expansion to accommodate future growth.

The Transfer Station is located in a previously disturbed area and no vegetation clearing is required to initiate the Project. The Project will involve the construction of an elevated platform for disposal of residential waste, a designated household hazardous waste collection site with appropriate environmental protections, envisioned as a set of modified "sea-can" shipping containers equipped with secondary containment, holding tanks, and collection and storage areas for safe temporary storage of household hazardous waste, and a recyclables collection and sorting area.

Typical waste generation is expected for completion of this project and will not include hazardous waste. All waste produced will be disposed of at an appropriate off-site waste disposal facility. Fill materials will be imported for construction. The source for the fill material is unknown at this time. Technical specifications indicating the soil type, clean soil source, and testing will be obtained prior to use. Testing will primarily be geotechnical, but chemistry testing may be included to ensure there is no contamination.

Due to previous disturbance it is unlikely Species at Risk will be impacted. A wildlife sweep will be completed by qualified professionals prior to construction.
