Wauzhushk Onigum Multi-Purpose Centre

 

The Community Living & Wellness Centre will be a state-of-the-art facility designed to serve the needs of the community. It will feature a full-size ice surface, six dressing rooms, spectator seating, a pro-shop, offices, a mezzanine level running/walking track, a fitness space, a dividable multi-purpose room, a canteen, a community lobby, and related support areas. The facility will be approximately 60,000 square feet in size and will utilize a combination of pre-engineered and conventional steel frame construction. The building will be constructed to a "Net Zero" ready standard in compliance with the requirements of the Infrastructure Canada – Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program. Key principles driving the design of the building include: • Culturally Reflective • Community Health and Wellness • Sustainability • Climate Risk Mitigation • Multi-Use • Multi-Generational • Economic Viability • Flexibility/ Adaptability. The project will involve significant infrastructure work, including: • Site excavation, blasting of bedrock (extensive in the Kenora area), and backfill • Extension of municipal water and sewer services (community system that connects with the City of Kenora) • Connection of power to the Hydro One network • Construction of geothermal system The building construction will include: • Foundation work • Building construction • Mechanical systems • Electrical systems • Ice plant installation • Installation of photovoltaic systems • Landscaping and site finishing • Site amenities Specific measures to be taken to achieve our environmental sustainability goals include: • Energy modeling • Building envelope design • Refrigerant selection • Climate risk assessment • Impact and innovation strategies
