Shoreline Repairs and Improvements on Rainy Lake and Footprint River

In response to a major flooding event that occurred in 2022, Naicatchewenin First Nation is proposing the repair of the damages caused by the event, reinforcement of the shorelines of Rainy Lake and Footprint River adjacent to the community, as well as improvements to the community's flood management infrastructure. Project activities include:

  • the installation of rip rap along shorelines that were eroded to stabilize and prevent further erosion from future flooding events;
  • the replacement of culverts to larger culverts that can drain higher water volumes more efficiently;
  • improvements to the main community road that was flooded over by raising and resurfacing to ensure egress/access to the community;
  • replace two community docks that were taken away by floodwater;
  • and re-gravelling of areas that were washed away.

These repairs and improvements will ensure the community is better prepared for future flooding events that are occurring on a more regular basis and will remain accessible during emergency circumstances.

End of Public Comment Period

October 8, 2023 – The public period on the project is closed. Indigenous Services Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
