Robin Hood Bay Radar Communications Site
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The Canadian Coast Guard is undertaking a project to construct a new Radar Communications Site at the existing Robin Hood Bay MCTS Site. The site is located at the end of Sugar loaf road East end of the St. John's, Newfoundland. The purpose of developing this new radar site includes but is not limited to:
- Enhancing marine situational awareness for the Coast Guard and other federal partners such as National Defence and Port Authorities;
- Addressing immediate gaps in radar coverage on Canada's East coast in support of marine safety activities;
- Enhancing the Coast Guard's ability to identify vessels and to improve the common operating picture in the area;
- Providing enhanced marine situational awareness for vessels approaching and exiting the St.John's Harbour.
In general, project works are well underway on this site. Radar Installation is Scheduled for December 2021 with Permanent Radar operation scheduled for February 2022.
The scope of the project is to build an approximately 24m radar at the existing CCG facility. Associated equipment will be housed in the existing Robin Hood Bay Communication building. The proposed implementation of the site development is as follows:

Environmental Assessments were completed in the project areas in 2018 prior to the implementation of the Impact Assessment Act in August of 2019. The purpose of this posting is to comply with CEAA 2012 and Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (formerly Industry Canada) Publication CPC-2-0-03.
