Rehabilitation of Merivale Road culvert

The City of Ottawa is proposing to undertake the renewal of the Merivale Road culvert (SN117620) crossing Black Rapids Creek. The culvert is located on Merivale Road 1.25 km north of Fallowfield Road in the City of Ottawa. The culvert has reached the end of its service life, and the renewal work will provide a structurally sound culvert.

The culvert is located mostly on City of Ottawa property but extends onto lands owned by the National Capital Commission (NCC) at the ends (inlet and outlet). Therefore, physical work that extends onto NCC lands will be required to complete the necessary works. As this project is on NCC land, the project is being reviewed under the Impact Assessment Act (IAA). The NCC is providing guidance in relation to meeting the legal requirements of this Act and related environmental requirements.

The proposed construction is scheduled to commence in early 2024 and completed by March 15, 2024. The majority of the work will take place within the City's right of way, however, access to NCC lands will be required within the vicinity of the culvert's ends. Physical work on NCC lands will include regrading of embankment slopes and ditches, construction staging, and general restorations. Areas impacted by construction activities will be reinstated to their initial condition.

Minimal vegetation disturbance and removal of seven Manitoba Maple trees will be required. A Letter of Permission has been provided by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and a Request for Review has been completed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
