Rehabilitation of the Voyageurs pathway

The western section of the Voyageur pathway was built partly in flood-prone areas. These sections are flooded practically every spring. During the major floods of 2017 & 2019, several other sections were flooded and consequently damaged. Temporary repairs were performed to allow the trail to reopen. However, inspection reports indicate that several culverts have fallen off and are at the end of their life.

To prevent damage to the pathway, the NCC must complete several interventions.

1)            Adding riprap at several locations along the trail banks

2)            Raising a portion of the trail

3)            Resurfacing of some damaged trail sections

4)            Replacement of some culverts

Construction will begin in the summer of 2023 and will be completed by the end of fall 2023.

Objectives

•             Ensure public safety and meet new user needs.

•             Protect the NCC's natural habitats and shoreline.

•             Prevent shoreline erosion.

Construction Stages

•             Site mobilization

•             Remove existing pavement.

•             Excavate granular base around culverts.

•             Replace culverts.

•             Backfill new culverts with granular material.

•             Compact the existing granular foundation under the pathway.

•             Resurface the pathway.

•             Install gates.

•             Install rip rap along several sections of the shoreline along the pathway.

•             Soil placement and seeding

•             Site demobilization

Coordination with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is required as DFO must issue a letter of advice under the Fisheries Act for planned work in fish habitat.
