Ottawa-Fallowfield Laboratory - Underground Storage Tank Removal

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency proposes to decommission and remove two underground fuel storage tanks at the CFIA Ottawa-Fallowfield Laboratory Campus, located at 3851 Fallowfield Road, Ottawa, Ontario, as part of a larger boiler upgrade and repair project. The underground fuel storage tanks are located at the Central Heating and Cooling Plant on the campus. The proposed works include the excavation; onsite stockpiling of suspect overburden for analytical testing; and the removal and disposal of two underground storage tanks, impacted water, fuel and overburden at an appropriately licensed facility. The excavation area will be backfilled with clean material and aggregate and the ground surface will be restored to its previous condition.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has determined that the proposed underground storage tank removal at CFIA’s Ottawa-Fallowfield Laboratory is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.  Potential environmental effects will be managed through technically and economically feasible mitigation measures and implemented for the following:  groundwater, soil, excess soil, and species at risk, wildlife, and vegetation. Therefore, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
