NCC River House - Floating Dock Installation by the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club

The National Capital Commission (NCC) River House has been the site of canoeing, boating and recreational activities for nearly a century. The property is located at 504 Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway in Ottawa, on the Ottawa River. The Ottawa New Edinburg Club (ONEC) will be installing floating docks on the west and south side of the NCC River House to support sailing, rowing and paddling for club members and those enrolled in ONEC training courses. The ONEC docks will also dock several motorized boats used to supervise training and club activities.

The NCC owns the water lot and the River House. A federal land use, design and transaction approval is required for this work. The project will be informed by advice from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Transport Canada (TC). Approval is required under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.

Since approvals are needed by the NCC and TC, a joint environmental review as per Section 82 of the Impact Assessment Act will also be completed.

The docks are made of a wooden frame and wooden decking and will be anchored to the bottom of the river using concrete blocks and chains. They will be installed in an area of approximately 650 square meters next to the NCC River House.

The work on the dock infrastructure is targeted to begin in May 2024 and will take one to two weeks to complete. Several motorized boats will be used to install the anchoring system and floating docks by hand.

All work will happen on the water. The floating docks will be installed seasonally from the months of May to October. They will be removed during the winter.
