Suncor Base Plant Water Treatment Plant Project

Suncor Energy Inc. is proposing to construct a wastewater treatment facility, located within the existing Suncor Base Plant area, north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. As proposed, the Suncor Base Plant Water Treatment Plant Project would include the construction of a new water pipeline and wastewater treatment facility, and modification of the existing outfall at Suncor's Base Plant. The project would treat oil sands process water and discharge into the Athabasca River, with a maximum design production rate of approximately 12 million cubic metres per year. The project is expected to operate for about 20 years.

October 9, 2026 — On September 25, 2026, and October 5, 2026, the Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature received additional requests to designate the Suncor Base Plant Water Treatment Plant Project, proposed by Suncor Energy Inc. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada is conducting an analysis and will make a recommendation to the President on whether to designate the project under the Impact Assessment Act.
