Berens River Bridge Replacement
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The Berens River First Nation (BRFN), Band No. 266 is proposing to replace the existing bridge across Berens River with a new, 72 m clear-span bridge. The bridge replacement project is part of the improvements being made to the all-season road (English Road Extension Project) and will be designed to create a safer, longer lasting structure for the BRFN community. The location of the bridge replacement project is over the Berens River near the east shore of Lake Winnipeg. The site is located approximately 270 air kilometers (km) north of Winnipeg and 391 km by Provincial Road #304 via a new all-season road nearing completion that connects the Provincial Road #304 and BRFN reserve. The replacement clear-span bridge will be located approximately 15 m upstream of the existing bridge. The existing bridge will remain in place and in-use until the new bridge and roads are constructed. Existing
access roads (North and South Road) approaching the existing bridge will be realigned to the replacement bridge once it is constructed. Following the construction of the new bridge and connecting roads, the existing bridge will be decommissioned and bridge decking removed, with the center pier remaining in the river at full height.
New infrastructure associated with the project is the construction of a new 72 m clear-span bridge across Berens River and temporary crane pads to support construction. The temporary crane pads will be constructed on both sides of the river, above the high water mark (HWM), and will be removed following construction. Additional temporary infrastructure required during construction
includes fuel tanks for equipment, a camp for the construction contractor staff, infrastructure to assemble and install the girders, crushers for the production of aggregate, and a concrete plant for the production of cast-in-place concrete.
