Norway House Cree Nation School Renovation and Playground CSC28

The Project involves renovating an existing school and an existing education resource centre within the Norway House Cree
Nation community. Renovation of the existing school includes approximately 2,600 m2 of outdoor renovation and approximately
50 m2 of indoor renovation. Renovation of the existing education resource centre includes approximately 2,100 m2 of outdoor
renovation and approximately 1,300 of indoor renovation. Below are the renovations planned for the Project:
School Renovation Activities (Attachment 1, Drawings L-110, L-111, and A-112):
-Demolition and disposal of an existing play structure located approximately 20 m northeast of the existing school
-Demolition and disposal of two existing slides located approximately 10 m and 40 m northeast of the existing school
-Demolition and disposal of an existing climber located approximately 30 m east of the existing school

-Removal and salvage of three existing swing sets located approximately 35 m, 50 m, and 55 m east of the existing school. The
swings will be relocated to a location that is to be confirmed.
-Removal and salvage of existing picnic tables located approximately 35 m northeast of the existing school, to be relocated
approximately 5 m northeast of the existing school
-Removal and disposal of an existing metal pipe located approximately 10 m northeast of the existing school
-Removal and replacement of an existing manhole cover located approximately 5 m east of the existing school
-Demolition of concrete steps located immediately south of the existing school
-Demolition and disposal of approximately 1,460 m2 of concrete located immediately east and south of the existing school
-Installation of an approximately 93 long, 200 mm wide concrete curb approximately 15 m northeast of the existing school. The
exact alignment will be determined and confirmed by the Contractor.
-Installation of two approximately 1.5 m long, 200 mm wide boot scraper surfaces located approximately 10 m and 40 m
northeast of the existing school
-Excavation of the approximately 1,460 m2 existing play area, located approximately 15 m northeast of the existing school
-Installation of granular backfill within the play area located approximately 15 m northeast of the existing school
-Refurbishing of existing planter located approximately 2 m northeast of the existing school
-Installing approximately 365 m2 of concrete pavement, including a concrete access ramp to the entry area, immediately
southeast of the existing school
-Installation of an approximately 30 m long guard railing and retaining wall located approximately 5 m southeast of the existing
school
-Installation of an approximately 40 m long chain link fence located approximately 10 m east of the existing school
-Installation of an approximately 18 m2 deck, including two concrete ramps and bollards, located approximately 40 m northeast
of the existing school
-Installation of a new play structure, located approximately 20 m northeast of the existing school. Play structure layout,
equipment, and materials will be determined by the Site Contractor and the Playground Contractor
-Installation of an approximately 16 m long, 450 mm corrugated steel pipe culvert, located approximately 50 m east of the
existing school
-Installation of an approximately 22 m long, 4 m wide crushed granularly paved roadway crossing over the culvert
-Installation of an approximately 620 m2 swale
-Installation of approximately 810 m2 of total sod lawn area, which includes the 620 m2 swale
-Interior renovations to the existing school's kitchen, including but not limited to a new ceiling, light fixtures, ductwork, and
exhaust hood and fan
Education Resource Centre Renovation Activities (Attachment 1: Drawings L-101, L-102, AD-100, AD-101, AD-102, A-100,
S-002):
-Topsoil and sod repair as required
-Installation of an approximately 90 m2 granular pathway located immediately west of the existing education resource centre
-Installation of approximately 64 m2 of sod and topsoil immediately west of the existing education resource centre
-Installation of an approximately 41 m2 stairs and deck, located immediately west of the existing resource centre
-Installation of three outdoor utility areas attached to the existing education resource centre, located on the northern wing,
eastern wing, and southern wing of the existing education resource centre, including installation of approximately 17 m2
(northern and eastern wing locations) and 20 m2 (southern wing location) of concrete pad areas
-Installation of fencing around the three utility areas, including approximately 13 m of fencing for the northern wing location,
approximately 13 m of fencing for the eastern wing location, and approximately 14 m of fencing for the southern wing location


Latest update

January 23, 2026 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Indigenous Services Canada  is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
