Application for a special event permit to allow a snowmobile event to pass through Akami-uapisku - KakKasuak - Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve

Cain's Quest is a snowmobile race held biannually during early March in central and southern Labrador. Up to 50 two-person teams will come from all over the world to participate in this endurance event, which covers approximately 3100 kilometers through the Labrador wilderness. Two segments of the proposed 2020 route pass through Akami-uapisku – KakKasuak – Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve; an eastern segment is 85.3 kilometers long, while the western segment is 16. 5 kilometers long, and the designated routes will be 20 meters wide. These segments provide safe routes that will allow participants to avoid dangerous ice conditions along the coast of Labrador, and connect the event to the communities of Rigolet and Cartwright. Use of these routes predates park establishment. These segments follow existing snowmobile trails and will be mandatory routes agreed upon by Cain's Quest organizers and Parks Canada; guided by GPS, racers will not be permitted to deviate from these routes within the national park reserve. These segments are short enough that stopping to refuel snowmobiles will not be required, and no checkpoints, fuel caches, other planned stops, or route clearing or preparation will be permitted in the national park reserve.
