Klinaklini Hydroelectric Project

Projects that were undergoing a comprehensive study at the time the provisions of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 came into force will continue to follow the requirements of the former Act. Under the former Act, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is responsible for conducting the comprehensive study of this project.

Kleana Power Corporation proposes to develop a run-of-river hydroelectric power project on the Klinaklini River on the mainland coast of British Columbia, 167 km northeast of Campbell River, B.C. The proposed development would have an average power output of 280 MW, with the capacity to produce 700 MW at maximum river flows. The project consists of: a diversion weir intake, headpond, penstock/18 km tunnel, powerhouse, tailrace, waste rock disposal, upgrades to existing logging roads, construction of new roads where required, upgrades of existing barge landing facility, and an aerial transmission line across Johnstone Strait and along Vancouver Island to Campbell River.
