Keogh River Bridge Replacement

Transport Canada is looking to replace the bridge over the Keogh River, located at the Port Hardy Airport.  It is expected that the bridge will be clearspan in design, removing all of the current in-water bridge support and returning the river back to it's original width.

Port Hardy Airport – June 23, 2022 – Transport Canada has determined that the proposed Keogh River Bridge Replacement project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.

 

Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are:

  • All works will be carried out in accordance with the construction environmental management plan.
  • In-water works will be scheduled during the least risk timing window for the protection of fish and fish habitat.
  • The project shall develop and implement a spill prevention and emergency response plan.
  • All excavation work will be conducted under an archaeology chance find management plan.
  • A qualified environmental professional will be retained to monitor project activities that may result in potential adverse effects.

 

Transport Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, the Transport Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
