Cassino Range Improvements - 4th Canadian Division Training Centre (Meaford)

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. The Cassino Grenade range at 4 (CDTC) Meaford is an important training facility used by the DND to train Canadian Forces personnel in the province of Ontario. The range is not in service as it is undersized as per the DND safety standards and requires additional length. An additional estimated 3.67 hectares is proposed to be added to the existing range to allow training activities. The new dimensions of the range will be approximately 93-99m wide and will increase from an existing length of 305m to 675m, adding an additional 370m. The Project proposes to excavate the floor of the extended range template to a depth of 0.15m and use the material to create a berm at the end of the range. Following the excavation, granular material will be imported, and used to create a new range floor over the entire extended range template. The fill material will be approximately 0.45m in depth and will be compacted to create a hard surface. The range floor will be appropriately shaped to allow for effective site drainage. Additional site work includes minor ditching around the perimeter of the range as well as emplacement of range markers. Mitigation measures including, but not exclusive to, those received from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Environment and Climate Change Canada will be implemented throughout the course of the project and until the site has fully stabilized

March 12, 2024 – The public comment period on the project is closed. The Department of National Defence is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
