Rockpoint Underground Storage Tanks Replacement within 2-36-017-09 W4M – Canadian Forces Base Suffield

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. The work is located entirely within CFB Suffield and is to be undertaken by Rockpoint Gas Storage (Rockpoint) at 2-36-017-09 W4M. Rockpoint is the proponent and is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the project. The project involves the replacement of three existing 1,000‑gallon (4,500L) underground storage tanks. Each tank is approximately 5ft (1.5 m) in diameter and 10 ft (3.1 m) in length. To complete the work, an excavation measuring approximately 20ft by 20ft (6.1 m × 6.1 m) and approximately 10 ft (3 m) deep will be required. Activities will include excavation to expose the existing tanks, removal of the tanks, installation of the replacement units, and backfilling of the excavation upon completion. All excavated materials will be temporarily stockpiled on site and reused during backfilling. No imported fill will be required, and no excess materials will be removed from the site. All work will occur within the existing approved facility footprint and previously disturbed areas. The maintenance activities involve replacement of existing infrastructure only and will not expand the approved workspace, increase surface disturbance, or alter current site operations.

September 10, 2026 - The Department of National Defence intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the Department of National Defence is inviting public comments until September 19, 2026 respecting that determination.
