Nigigoonsiminikaaning Wastewater Treatment and Collection System Project

Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation (Rainy Lake 26A) is located in northwestern Ontario approximately 40 kilometres east of Fort Frances, on Highway No. 11 (Trans-Canada Hwy), and is comprised of approximately 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of land. The project includes development of a communal wastewater collection and treatment system in the community for a design period of 20 years. The wastewater system will consist of approximately 3,500 m of small diameter low-pressure sewer system with individual septic tank effluent pumping (STEP) systems at each house/building and a packaged membrane bioreactor wastewater treatment plant located in a new building. The existing individual on- site septic systems will be removed or decommissioned.

Notice determination

December 22, 2022 – Indigenous Services Canada and Infrastructure Canada have determined that the proposed Wastewater Treatment and Collection System Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

 

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • Community knowledge; and.
  • Mitigation measures

 

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address:

  • Impacts to the land, resulting from vegetation clearing;
  • Impacts to the water, including fish and fish habitat, resulting from construction of a new effluent outfall pipe in Rainy Lake.

 

Indigenous Services Canada and Infrastructure Canada are satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada and Infrastructure Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part. .
