Wharf Reconstruction at Harbour Breton SCH, NL

The proposed project at Harbour Breton SCH includes the demolition, removal, and reconstruction of the wharf. This will be a like-for-like replacement, with the new wharf being constructed with similar dimensions of the existing wharf and constructed within the approximate footprint of the existing wharf. The existing crib timbers and fenders contain creosote timber which will be disposed of at one of the provincially approved lined waste disposal sites. The existing wharf provides access to a floating dock system located at the northeastern apex of the wharf. The floating dock will be disconnected and set aside until the new wharf is constructed and then the floating dock can be floated into place and reconnected to the new wharf.  The new wharf will be constructed of treated timber crib wharf structures, complete with a new reinforced concrete deck. Excavation/dredging will take place in order to achieve a solid foundation for the new timber crib wharf. A new rock mattress, including scour protection, will be installed around the new wharf.

Notice of Intent to Make a Determination – Start of Public Comment Period

September 18, 2026 – The federal authorities intend to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the federal authorities are inviting public comments until October 18, 2026 respecting that determination.
