Saddle Island Interpretive Circuit

The proposed project expands on the 2023 initiative aimed at revitalizing the visitor experience at Red Bay National Historic Site. Key components of this project include development of an interpretation circuit, construction of a replica Basque whaling station and memorial for Basque whalers, and enhancements to visitor facilities. The project scope encompasses the construction of four circular interpretation platforms interconnected by a pre-existing boardwalk, and installation of welcome signage and interpretation panels. Additionally, a new trail will be established to access the whaling station replica, complemented by the installation of a whaler's memorial sculpture along the boardwalk. Site improvements include the relocation of a urine-diverting toilet, the construction of an accessible platform, and the removal of historical waste onsite. These infrastructure enhancements aim to enrich the visitor experience by deepening comprehension of the site's cultural heritage, while fostering greater public awareness of its designation as a World Heritage Site
