Wharf Reconstruction at Mary's Harbour SCH, NL

The proposed project at Mary's Harbour SCH includes: the demolition, removal, and reconstruction of the east-west facing portion of the finger pier wharf and a small section of the marginal wharf; the installation of additional rock materials to expand the footprint of the rock mattress; the dredging of the southwest corner; the demolition, removal, and reconstruction of a building; and the refurbishments to the uplands.

The existing wharf is a timber crib wharf with a concrete deck. The east-west finger pier wharf will need to be disconnected from the north-south facing portion of the finger pier wharf during demolition. All demolition debris, including creosote timber, will be disposed of at an approved disposal site.  The new wharf structures will be a like-for-like replacement, with the new structures being constructed in the exact footprint of the existing wharf. The new east-west finger pier wharf will be  constructed of new treated timber crib wharf structures, complete with a reinforced concrete deck.

A new rock mattress and scour protection will be installed around the east-west finger pier wharf. The existing rock mattress (including the scour rock) will be re-shaped in order to accommodate the installation of new rock mattress material and additional scour rock. Additionally, the southwest corner will be dredged to approximately 4.5 meters below the low normal tide.

The existing freight shed building, also known as the Harbour Authority building, is going to be removed in its entirety, including the concrete floor. The new building will be constructed in the approximate same footprint as the existing building.

The uplands are topped with concrete – this concrete will be removed and the uplands will be re-graded. New reinforced concrete will be installed on the newly re-graded uplands and blended with the slope of the new wharf. Additionally, a retaining wall and guard rail will be installed on the existing southwestern marginal wharf.

Notice of Intent to Make a Determination – Start of Public Comment Period

September 18, 2026 – The federal authorities intend to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the federal authorities are inviting public comments until October 18, 2026 respecting that determination.
