  • The proposed site for the Beaver Dam Mine Project is incredibly reckless and irresponsible from an environmental standpoint. The proximity to the West River watershed, as well as traditional Mi’Kma’ki lands, to this Open-Pit desecration of our environment is of immense concern. The long-term environmental impact on this site, for short-term gains, would be detrimental, regardless of the companies’ promised remediation plans.   For almost 20 years, the Nova Scotia Salmon Association has been working to restore the population of salmonid species in the West River of Sheet Harbour. This began with establishing North America’s first lime-doser, a Norwegian innovation that balances the pH of the waters. By introducing measured amounts of lime to the watershed, the accumulated effects of industrial expansion along the Eastern Seaboard from ...

  • As someone  who has worked as a habitat restoration practitioner with the Nova Scotia Salmon Association for more than twenty years, I have contributed to the NSSA’s response to the revised Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Beaver Dam mine project.  I am in complete agreement, both professionally and personally, with the concerns articulated in our submission.   The proposed project, situated in the West River watershed, jeopardizes more than two decades of hard work, massive investment, and a pronounced, yet still fragile, recovery of Atlantic salmon –  a COSEWIC-assessed species at risk.   Approval of this project would signify a systemic disregard for wildlife conservation, scientific research, protection of biodiversity, and climate resilience. The proposed quarry is too close to the Killag River (Cameron Flowage),  and the spatial extent of the proposed work is too large, unnecessarily encroaching ...

  • Please accept this letter as confirmation that I oppose the proposed Beaver Dam Mine Project, as outlined in the revised Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). I fully support and echo the comments and concerns outlined by the Nova Scotia Salmon Association. In addition, here is a short list of some additional concerns to be emphasized: I am concerned that the certain impacts to West River Restoration Project run by the Nova Scotia Salmon Association and partners are not being adequately considered. Such certain impacts include: Warming of the Killag River and Tent Brook – both important coolwater streams Interruption of data continuity for the 17-year long research project. These data, such as water quality, electrofishing, temperature, and others will be rendered less valuable and less suited to long-term monitoring research.  Burying of forested lands that are the critical headwaters of the ...

  • 1 December 17, 2021 Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency Re: Comments on EIS Reports Proposed Beaver Dam Gold Mine, NS Herein are my comments and concerns regarding the EIS reports. My focus is on Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) and groundwater: 1. I don’t see any discussion on fractures created around the Open Pit from blasting. My research at the Halifax Airport revealed that ARD began a few months following bedrock blasting and accelerated quickly, stemming from mineral exposure along the newly created fractures extending outward from the blast source. I refer to this as a “blast halo” around the pit which could extend many tens of metres outward from the open pit. I anticipate this situation will occur at the Open Pit at Beaver Dam, resulting in ARD inflow during pit operations and following closure as the pit fills over an estimated 13 year time frame. 2. I read that ARD is estimated to begin after 20 years in the PAG stockpile. I am curious as to the ...

  • Thank you for the opportunity to make public comments on this matter. 'Boom and bust" extractive industries such as hard rock mining can not be permitted as "sustainable" development. No where in the world do current mining practices typically reflect the spirit of the provinces Sustainable Development Goals Act. Gold mining is not acceptable new economic development with understanding of pressing climate related issues.  I question streamlined for industrial ease of access provincial and federal permitting\monitoring\regulatory process's ability to prevent environmental and social devastation evidently caused by mining activity elsewhere in the world from happening in here. The applicant in this proposal is still facing 32 allegations of environmental infractions at their Touqouy mine. This inability to adequately regulate and monitor industry is also evidenced globally by multitudes of contaminated abandoned mine sites , air\water pollution ...
