Leafy Spurge Biological Control in Grasslands National Park

The objective of this project is to release biological control agents Aphthona sp. (flea beetles) in specific areas of Grasslands National Park with leafy spurge infestations that are difficult to control using herbicide.. The flea beetles will be released summer 2025 and are a host specific biological control agent that only eats leafy spurge. This Project will be assessed with a Basic Impact Assessment. Vegetation and flea beetle population monitoring will be conducted at the release site to ensure effective control of leafy spurge after the initial release. Effective control will facilitate ecological conservation gains such as reduction of invasive plant species (leafy spurge) and increase of native plant species, enhancing species at risk habitat.
