Howe House Removal

This project proposes to remove the Howe house in the East Block of Grasslands National Park. This structure is no longer being used for park management or other activities. The removal of the Howe house aims to reduce anthropogenic disturbance on otherwise suitable sage-grouse habitat. The decommission and removal of the Howe House will be contracted out following approved guidelines for reducing environmental impacts. A SCRIA was submitted to Cultural Resources Management to assess the structure, it was approved for removal as it did not meet the criteria for cultural heritage. No other impacts to the environment are expected as a result of work.

Latest update

September 22, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until DATE respecting that determination.
