Wharf Demolition, Hurkett, Ontario

  The Proposed Project

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Small Craft Harbours (DFO-SCH) are proposing to demolish the existing wharf and supporting structure at the Hurkett Small Craft Harbour. The timber piles supporting the timber decking have started to deteriorate to the point where the integrity of the wharf is no longer sound. The wharf decking, stringers, fenders, pile caps and sixty-four (64) timber piles will be removed and leveled to the lakebed. A small amount armour stone will be placed around the wharf approach where the last five (5) piles will be buried.

It is anticipated that the contractor will use the hand power tools including chainsaws, as well as various pieces of heavy equipment (i.e., an excavator, small crane, skid steer, and trailers). The wharf decking will be released from the timber support piles and pulled apart in sections where it will be stockpile on land. The timber piles will be cut to the level of the lakebed using divers with an underwater chainsaw(s). Piles will be pulled/lifted onto shore with a crane. All wharf materials will be hauled to a disposal location off site. Armour stone materials will be placed by an excavator or skid steer to cover the remaining piles directly adjacent to the shore.
