Martin Point Landfill Remediation
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The Martin Point landfill site is located within Gros Morne National Park, situated west of Highway 430 on the western shore of Newfoundland. It is understood that the site was cleared and quarried as a borrow source during adjacent highway construction in the late 1960's, then opportunistically used as a landfill from approximately 1971–1977, primarily servicing the small community of Sally's Cove. The landfill is registered on the Federal Contaminated Sites Inventory (FCSI# 00025561), and Phase I and II contaminated site assessments have been completed, and a Phase III assessment was initiated. Using results from previous boreholes and additional test pits to be completed this fall remediation locations will be finalized, and waste will be removed. A historic road will be reinstated to facilitate the mechanical removal of large waste, and small waste will be removed by hand. Large waste material will be removed using rock trucks and all waste will be disposed of at an approved waste management facility. The work is expected to take one week.
