Kitimat LNG Terminal, Bish Cove, BC - Loading and Disposal at Sea of Excavated Material

The Minister of the Environment has designated this project and the environmental assessment will continue under the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada are required to ensure that a screening level environmental assessment is conducted for proposed Disposal at Sea activities in relation to the construction of the Kitimat LNG (KM LNG) facility located 14 km south of Kitimat (516156E, 5975230N (UTM 09)). KM LNG Operating General Partnership is proposing to load barges and subsequently dispose of at sea up to 2,300,000 m3 of material resulting from site grading at the Kitimat LNG Facility. The scope of the project includes the loading of excavated materials onto split-hull dump barges, transportation of the material to the disposal site, and subsequent disposal. The material is proposed to be disposed of at a new disposal at sea site located 2.2 km offshore from the terminal site, at approximately 516671E, 5973296N (UTM 09). The new site would have an approximate radius of 1,000 m. Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an environmental assessment is required because Environment Canada may take action in relation to subsection 127(1) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada may take action in relation to subsection 32 and subsection 35(2) of the Fisheries Act, for the purposes of enabling the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
