Cheviot Coal Mine Project

About the Project

The Cheviot Coal Mine Project, proposed by Cardinal River Coal, is located in the Rocky Mountains of west-central Alberta west of Edmonton and 70 km south of the Town of Hinton. It includes a coal plant, an open-pit coal mine, a restored rail line, an upgraded access road into the mine area, and a new transmission line and substation to supply electrical power to the mine.

A joint panel between the Alberta Energy Utilities Board and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency was reconvened following a Federal Court decision dated April 8, 1999. The court ruled that the panel's environmental assessment was incomplete.

The panel heard new information on the project to address issues raised in the Federal Court decision. It released its report on September 12, 2000.
