Cold Lake First Nation: CUZ46 Wastewater System Expansion

The existing capacity of the Cold Lake First Nation wastewater collection and treatment system has been deemed insufficient to meet current and projected future demand. As such, Cold Lake First Nation proposes the expansion of its wastewater collection infrastructure to include an expansion of the collection system, and construction of a new lift station, 4.4 km of wastewater forcemain and gravity wastewater main, connection to the City of Cold Lake wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure, and decommissioning of the existing Cold Lake First Nation wastewater treatment lagoon. The on-reserve portions of the routing will generally follow established roadways to the crossing of the Beaver River.

Extensive geohazard analysis and geotechnical investigations have been completed and identified the presence of a deep-seated landslide along the south embankment of the Beaver River. Trees within the landslide area suggest that the slope has not been subject to significant displacement for at least 50 years indicating stability of the area in comparison to other alignments reviewed as part of the project. The north side of the river valley does not demonstrate significant geohazards.

Vegetation will be cleared and mulched to a width of 4.0m along the entire route to facilitate equipment access and maintenance of the infrastructure.

The off-reserve alignments generally follow un-developed public right-of-ways under the jurisdiction of the MD of Bonnyville and are outside of the scope of this impact assessment.
