• Hello,   I am strongly concerned that it appears only indigenous communities and the impacts to them are being considered in relation to the Beacon AI Heartland Project. Why are the communities of Sturgeon County, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, etc. not being included in this Impact Assessment? I understand there is a difference of regulation, but there is also an ethical obligation to consult and engage with those whom may be impacted.   Neither IAAC or the proponent have done a sufficient job to notify and thus consult the public whom are likely to experience significant and adverse impacts from this project.   Assessment without the direct and meaningful contribution of the communities whom may experience some of the most direct impacts is not sufficient to determine impacts.   Already, in reviewing the proponent's documents, they state "Water wells in the surrounding area are used ...

• Given the past few years of increasingly intense heat and drought experienced by this province during summer months, and the ever increasing cost of electricity, it is unconscionable that the government of Alberta and Canada are even considering allowing the energy and resource sucking monstrosity known as data centres to be built in this province.  Even the advocates of these centres recognize the strain these operations put on the local resources.  Beyond initial construction and a handful of jobs after the fact, any benefit to the presence of the data centre leaves the community where it is creating the damage and the people living next to them are left to work around them.  The only people strongly advocating for data centres are the organizations or individuals who are growing their wealth off the environmental damage, health risks and inconvenience of the people in the communities where they exist.

• I am very concerned about the short term life of this project versus the potential benefits. I do not see the need for an AI data centre. Most importantly, I have grave concerns about the environmental impacts in a province that has been shown to not enforce safety standards or clean up standards of projects already. What is the impact going to be on local water usage, and area water quality? What will the impact be on air quality, which is already a struggle in this province? In my opinion this is not needed, and is in a poor location. This project needs more transparent studies and plans in regards to safety, regluatory enforcement, and environmental impacts over the intended lifetime of the project.

• Hello, I live in Fort Saskatchewan and have been in Alberta for about ten years. I work as an electrician and I’ve also worked in tech before in New Brunswick. I have concerns about the proposed AI data center. These facilites use a lot of utlitiles  which are already under pressure here, and any major industrial load tends to push costs up for everyone else. Expanding local infrastructure isn’t free and those bills usually end up on residents and municipalities. Another issue is that data centers don’t create many permanent jobs. Once they’re built, it’s mostly automated with a small technical staff. For the amount of land, power, and water they need, the economic return is very low compared to projects in energy, or manufacturing, which at least provide long-term employment and revenue. • Data centers occupy large areas of land, consume large amounts of water and electricity/gas that would otherwise be used for the benefit of the local community. Data centers do not offer any long term local benefits except to companies that will profit off of them. In the beginning there will be a few hundred jobs created but once the data center is established it does not need many people to operate these centers. It is a quick construction boom with a lay off shortly after and no long term job creation and the land it is occupying cannot be used for other projects that would benefit the community, example- housing, recreation, a site with long term job creation. This data center has a permit to consume 1500 cubic meters of water a day, that is still a crazy amount of water. With the droughts we have been having, forest fires, and increase in population in the area, it would be very detrimental to the local region to have a data center using up the resources we have.
