Good morning,

Local media in Bruce County have reported that OPG has withdrawn their application for their proposed deep geological repository for low and intermediate level waste beneath the Bruce Nuclear Generation Station (see https://blackburnnews.com/midwestern-ontario/midwestern-ontario-news/2020/06/22/opg-formally-ends-proposed-nuclear-waste-dgr-bruce-power/) but the most recent front page post on the IAA registry site for this project is dated August 21, 2017 and titled "The Minister of Environment and Climate Change has requested additional information on the environmental assessment from the proponent" (additional items are posted under "all documents", including one comment in 2020 submitted by John Mann and an exchange in 2019 between OPG and CEAA related to "Changes to Federal Legislation and implications for the Deep Geologic Repository Project for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste").

We have three related questions:

  • when can we expect to see OPG's notice of withdrawal of their application posted to the registry?
  • will there be a formal response from the Minister? i.e. will the Minister's formally accept OPG's withdrawal of the DGR application and will that constitute the Minister's "decision statement" on this project?
  • we are surprised that there are no posts on the registry related to the Saugeen Ojibway Nation's vote on OPG's DGR, held on January 31st, and would like clarification as to why those developments are not posted on the registry: is this because neither OPG or SON have provided the Agency with that information, or for some other reason?

We believe that having a complete public record of this review is important, and request that the Agency to set out for us what the final steps will be to complete and then close the record for this proceeding.

Thank you for your attention and assistance.
