Little Bow Reservoir Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project – Federal Funding Awarded to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – October 25, 2010 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has awarded $4,000 to the Métis Nation of Alberta Association Region 3 to support it's participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Little Bow Reservoir Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project in Alberta.

This funding is awarded through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is being provided to assist the recipient in participating in upcoming steps in the comprehensive study process, including the review of the environmental impact statement and the comprehensive study report.

A funding review committee examined the request for funding. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry on the Agency’s website, under reference number 09-03-49421.

Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation and Alberta Environment propose to upgrade and rehabilitate the Little Bow Reservoir. The project involves upgrading of the dam structures and associated canals in the Little Bow reservoir and the replacement of the control structure in the canal connecting the Travers and Little Bow reservoirs. These works will increase the surface area of the Little Bow reservoir from 6.16 sq. km to 8.86 sq. km and allow the Little Bow and Travers reservoirs to be operated in tandem under a common full supply level (FSL).

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
