The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is making available $30,000 under its Participant Funding Program (the Program) to assist groups and/or individuals to take part in the environmental assessment of the proposed Klinaklini Hydroelectric Development Project in south-western British Columbia.

To receive funding, successful applicants must participate in the environmental assessment of the project. This funding is intended for activities that will follow the public consultation currently underway on the scope of the project.

Funding applications received by the Agency at the address indicated below by June 12, 2008 will be considered. An announcement of the successful funding recipients will be made at a later date.

Information on the proposed project and the Program, including the Participant Funding Program Guide, the application form and the contribution agreement that describes the obligations of each party and the conditions for payments, is available on the Agency’s Web site.

Kleana Power Corporation proposes to develop a hydroelectric power project on the Klinaklini River on the mainland coast of BC, 167 km northeast of the town of Campbell River, Vancouver Island. The proposed development would have an average power output of 280 MW, with the capacity to produce 700 MW at maximum river flows. The project would consist of constructing a diversion weir intake, headpond, penstock/18km tunnel, powerhouse, tailrace, waste rock disposal, upgrading existing logging roads, constructing new roads where required, upgrading of existing barge landing facility, and an aerial transmission line across Johnstone Strait and along Vancouver Island to Campbell River.
