Notice of intent to make a determination – Public comments invited

August 9, 2024

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) must determine whether the proposed Summerland Irrigation Infrastructure Rehabilitation is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this decision, ECCC is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.

The Proposed Project

Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada is proposing to upgrade the existing irrigation system at the Summerland Research and Development Centre. The current irrigation system is 70-100 years old and has reached the end of its expected life cycle. It is experiencing failures to isolation valves and pressure reducing valves, as well as having significant leaks in the system.

A feasibility study was completed in spring of 2020 which recommended replacing the underground pipe network with new steel and PVC pipe networks and provide new pressure relief valves and filtration stations. In total there is approximately 9.2 km of pipeline to be installed.

The proponent has applied to ECCC for a Species at Risk Act permit under section 73 for Schedule 1 listed species in the area.
