The Jannacks Narrows Minor Shore Light (MSL) site is located along the southern shore of Bala Park Island on Lake Muskoka, in the Township of Muskoka Lakes, Ontario and is approximately 2 km northwest of Torrence and 2.5 km southeast of Bala. The project area encompasses two land parcels including a privately-owned cottage (Property 95-M8) and the MSL property under the administration of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

The Project consists of a soil remediation program and includes the following activities:

  • Excavation will be completed using hand shovelling and potentially a small backhoe
  • Soil will be removed by a barge and transported for treatment or disposal at an appropriately licensed site
  • Clean fill, composed of coarse sand, will be placed by hand or by a small backhoe, and rolled for compaction
  • Erosion prevention will be required to protect the shoreline
  • Revegetate the topsoil with local native species

The work is anticipated to occur during the month of September 2021 and be completed by early October 2021.

The contaminated soil area in the Project Area is approximately 41.5 m2, with an average depth of approximately 0.2 m, and an estimated contaminated soil volume of approximately 8.3 m3.
