The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) Real Properties Operations Borden Detachment, proposes to install a beaver baffle across a range road, connecting a pond and downstream intermittent watercourse. The roadway is located between Range and Training Area B1 and B2, at CFB Borden. The installation of the beaver baffle will allow for waterflow out of the pond area and will maintain a consistent water level in the pond, improving the habitat for a Species at Risk. Furthermore, this will remove a potential fording area and reduce the likelihood of a road washout. The beaver baffle will consist of a 6 - 8 inch diameter pipe that is inserted upright into the pond, is placed through the beaver dam and across the roadway, directing water into the downstream watercourse. The pipe will be within a newly installed culvert across the roadway. The intake in the pond has a cage to prevent beavers from blocking the pipe. Once the water level of the pond reaches the height of the intake pipe, water will flow into the pipe and down into the watercourse. The installation of the baffles is planned for fall, during a low water flow period.
