Brooks Power Project Federal Environmental Assessment Terminated

On December 10, 2004, the Minister of the Environment, the Honourable Stéphane Dion, determined that a federal environmental assessment of the proposed Brooks Power Project was no longer necessary and stopped the panel review process. The federal responsible authority for the project was Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The project in question covered approximately 13,500 hectares and included a coal-fired power plant that consisted of two 500 megawatt power generating units and an adjacent coal mine to supply fuel to the plant. Brooks is located 180 kilometres southeast of Calgary, Alberta. In August 2004, Fisheries and Oceans Canada confirmed that Luscar Limited had withdrawn this project. The responsible authority recommended that the environmental assessment process be stopped as it will no longer exercise any federal power or perform any federal duty or function identified in section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act in relation to this project.

After careful consideration, Minister Dion decided, under section 27 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, to terminate the environmental assessment of the proposed project.
