Waneta Hydroelectric Expansion Project (Archived)

Description: The Waneta Hydroelectric Expansion Project, proposed by Columbia Power Corporation and the Columbia Basin Trust, comprises a new hydroelectric generating facility on the west bank of the Pend d'Oreille River, adjacent to the existing Waneta Dam, south of Trail, British Columbia. The new facility would use water flows from the Pend d'Oreille River, currently spilled by the existing Waneta Generating Station, to generate approximately 435 megawatts of electricity. The new facility would be interconnected with the BC Hydro transmission grid at the Selkirk Substation by a new 10 kilometre, 230 kilovolt transmission line. The project consists of the construction and operation of a power plant and transmission line as well as temporary facilities for construction.

Decision of the Minister of the Environment: On May 1, 2008, the Minister of the Environment announced that the project is unlikely to cause significant adverse environmental effects and referred the project back to the responsible authorities for appropriate next steps.
